The Star Casino in Sydney chose a bespoke, high-end car park floor that would impress its VIP visitors before they even step through the venue’s front door.

The premier entertainment destination located in Darling Harbour wanted to revitalise its parking facility as well as extend the luxurious atmosphere of its private Sovereign Room, which is reserved for the casino’s high rollers.

85,000m² of Flowcrete Australia’s specialist deck coating systems were installed across the five-storey car parking facility to achieve a floor that would provide the desired aesthetics as well as the necessary functionality and durability

For the Sovereign Room’s parking zone, 11,500m² of Deckcoat EP and 1,500m² of Deckshield ID was applied in custom colours to craft a stylish and on-brand atmosphere in the by-invitation-only area. The Sovereign Room logo was incorporated into the floor coating at the threshold between the car park and the exclusive Casino area to reinforce the venue’s identity and image.

Flowcrete Australia’s Managing Director, Sean Tinsley, said: “Star Casino knew that its customers needed to be impressed by the casino from the moment they first arrive – which for many will be when they drive into the car park.

“Therefore each element of the parking area had to be able to maintain a decorative and unblemished appearance in the face of multiple potentially damaging factors. As few areas of a car park are put through as much strain as the floor, Star Casino chose a high performance finish that would consistently provide the desired aesthetics despite the inherent challenges.”

Two shades of grey were used to define the parking bays and driveways throughout the parking facility while harbour blue marked out the disabled spaces. Clear pathways were created around the car park by applying contrasting yellow and white line markings, which would help patrons to safely navigate around the building. All the line marking and hatching, including the disabled bays, was completed to the Australian Standard AS/NZS 2890.6-2009.

Deckshield ID Rapide in black with contrasting yellow demarcations was installed on the ramps, critical traffic junctions and entrances. A quick curing solution was required in these areas and using Deckshield ID Rapide meant that they were trafficable just one hour after installation.

It was imperative that the floor would maintain its crisp colours despite the movement of heavy vehicles, automotive oils and greases, heavy impacts and cleaning that it would be exposed to. The Star Casino’s operators knew that if the floor failed it would not only present an unsightly and unclean appearance to customers, but if the signage eroded then it could affect the safety of users.

Alongside these aesthetic and functional demands, the car park floor had to meet a long list of strict practical criteria, such as not causing dust, being odour-free, easy to clean and glossy.

The car park was constantly operational throughout the 26-week application. To minimise inconvenience and ensure the safety of users, traffic management was factored into the refurbishment, including by sectioning off areas of the site.
